Kevin Kerslake
One of a handful of directors responsible for forging the visual identity of the MTV generation, Kevin Kerslake cut his teeth directing award-winning music videos for Nirvana, Green Day, R.E.M., Prince, STP, the Rolling Stones, Smashing Pumpkins, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and many more.
A hybrid surf film/commercial campaign for Quiksilver and the first of two movies on Electric Daisy Carnival launched a move into branded content where Kerslake has directed commercials and multimedia, brand-integrated campaigns for the likes of AT&T, Hyundai, Nike, Puma, Reebok, DC Shoes, Coca-Cola, Sprite, Sony Playstation, Doctors Without Borders and Amnesty International.
Building upon his role in enhancing the value of iconic core culture brands like DC Shoes and Quiksilver, which helped foster moves into the mainstream, Kerslake’s client-direct work kept him working with premiere brands in the sweet spot of pop culture. As the exclusive film & video arm of Insomniac Events and HARD Events, in particular, his films and event trailers were instrumental in the explosive growth of both companies which resulted in extremely lucrative acquisitions by Live Nation.
In traditional scripted film & television, Kerslake has directed miniseries and one hour dramas for Disney/ABC and FOX (e.g., FALLEN miniseries starring Paul Wesley and Bryan Cranston, and THE VISITOR starring John Corbett), plus shouldered screenwriting duties for BBC, Sony, Paramount, Warner Bros, Ed Pressman and Quentin Tarantino’s A Band Apart.
BAD REPUTATION, Kerslake’s latest documentary on the life of Joan Jett, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, joining a list of critically-acclaimed core culture and music docs that includes THE RAMONES: WE’RE OUTTA HERE!, BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS’ LEGEND REMIXED, AS I AM: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF DJ AM, THE ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE, and NIRVANA: LIVE! Edward Bates
Combining creative chops with production savvy, EDWARD BATES has consistently delivered 10x revenues to his investors. As a producer, Bates managed a thriving independent film studio before striking out on his own. Using a rights bifurcation strategy, he financed two films that competed at Sundance (THE LAST TIME I COMMITTED SUICIDE starring Keanu Reeves, Adrian Brody & Thomas Jane, and FALL TIME starring Mickey Rourke) and launched a literary management company, selling dozens of projects to 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight, Warner Brothers, Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, MTV and ABC Studios, among others. Fox Searchlight soon Bates on board to both devise production strategies for films on their slate and rescue productions that were running into trouble. Bates ended up staying at Searchlight for over 10 years, and, in addition to being the studio’s go-to fix-it guy on films shot throughout the world, he also developed and produced dozens of films for them, including NOTORIOUS and KINGDOM COME starring LL Cool J, Whoopi Goldberg, Jada Pinkett-Smith & Anthony Anderson, which became the highest grossing original film for Fox Searchlight.
Bates left the studio to develop and executive produce several television series for ABC Family, often in conjunction with ITV and Endemol, including the Saturn-nominated FALLEN miniseries starring Bryan Cranston and Paul Wesley, which earned a #1 ranking the nights it aired. He also produced a number of documentaries, including FIX: THE MINISTRY MOVIE and THE ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE, which tapped his entrepreneurial instincts. Bates ended up designing and implementing business affairs strategies and marketing & distribution campaigns that utilized crowd-source marketing tactics and resulted in over 250,000,000 unique views of his marketing content for both films.
